At rally events like Oregon Trail Rally, Ham operators (licensed amateur radio volunteers) are often the first and only line of communication in remote stage locations.

For a first-time volunteer, the role offers a front-row view of how a rally actually operates—relaying real-time updates between start, finish, and safety crews, tracking car movement, and reporting issues as they happen.

With little to no cell service in many areas, Ham radio becomes the backbone of stage communication, giving new volunteers hands-on responsibility and a direct role in keeping the event safe, coordinated, and running smoothly.

In Shawn's own words
